With a 3-0 victory over Senegal on Sunday night, England moved through to the World Cup quarterfinals.
The Three Lions had some flaws in the first half, but they got stronger as Senegal faltered and, most importantly, they regained their scoring touch to set up an intriguing clash with France in the round of eight.
For the opening 40 minutes, Senegal put pressure on an unsteady England, but they squandered their chances and paid the price at the end of the half. As a result, the AFCON champions lost all of their momentum, and Gareth Southgate’s team was able to easily win the game.
Due to a lack of routine and control in the first 20 minutes, both teams failed to establish themselves and take the lead of the match.
When the Three Lions were careless with the ball in their own penalty area, Senegal appeared capable of passing the Three Lions. England challenged Edouard Mendy with a few crosses.
After Harry Maguire botched a ball, Senegal had a golden chance to score, but both John Stones and Jordan Pickford denied them.
VAR reviewed a probable handball against the Manchester City player for a small period of time, but the probe was quickly over.
Senegal’s three halftime substitutes had failed to turn the tide back in their favor, and a three-goal advantage was too much for them.
England expertly controlled the game in the final 30 minutes by maintaining a rigid formation, improving their passing, and rotating as needed.
Game management was one of England’s more outstanding facets of their late-game performance.
The fact that they are constantly becoming better is undoubtedly another plus, even though they cannot afford to start against France the way they did against Senegal.
